By car

The island can be reached easily from the mainland via the Strelasund Crossing or via the car ferry “Stahlbrode – Glewitz”.

FROM DIRECTION OF HAMBURG / LÜBECK (WEST)

From motorway A1, drive to the Baltic motorway A20 via motorway intersection Lübeck. Due to the partial closure of the motorway A20 in the area around Tribsees, a roughly 4 km long diversion route leads you back to the motorway A20. The exit Stralsund / island of Rügen then takes you to the island of Rügen via the motorway approach road (Bundesstraße 96 n) and the bypass Stralsund.

Recommendation for the time of arrival: Especially on weekends and public holidays many guests arrive in the time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This can lead to increased traffic density in the area of the diversion route around Tribsees and on the island. We recommend therefore an arrival time as early in the day as possible. Please also pay attention to the speed camera in Langsdorf! Talk to your host, how he or she can assist you with an early arrival.

Please also note the information provided by the radio traffic service!

FROM DIRECTION OF BERLIN (SOUTH)

We recommend travellers from the South to drive via the Berliner Ring and the motorway A11 to the motorway intersection Uckermark and from there to the motorway A20 in direction of Stralsund. From there the motorway approach road (Bundesstraße 96 n) brings you to the island of Rügen.

FROM DIRECTION OF POLAND

The motorway A11 Stettin-Berlin takes you to the motorway A20 in direction of Stralsund via the Uckermark junction. Take the exit Stralsund junction to the Bundesstraße 96 n in direction of Stralsund / Rügen.

The Rügen ferry service between Stahlbrode and Glewitz means a big reduction of traffic load for the Rugia Bridge and the old Rugia Causeway, especially in the summer months. For many tourists, already the crossing is a happening. In the months of April to October, the car ferries operate daily and transport visitors over the Strelasund every 20 minutes.
From the motorway A20, take the exit „Rügen/Stralsund“ via the Rügen approach road to the exit Miltzow. Afterwards just follow the signposting till Stahlbrode. A beautiful avenue route then leads from Glewitz to Rügen’s resort coast.

By train

The Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) makes use of several long-distance trains to bring guests to the island of Rügen. Connections are available from Munich, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and from the Ruhr region to the island. More information about direct connections can be found HERE.

It only takes roughly three hours from Berlin main station to Stralsund main station. From there regional trains go to Altefähr, Samtens, Bergen, Lietzow and Sassnitz.

From Hamburg, one can take the Intercity train via Rostock and be in the Baltic Sea resort Binz in approximately four hours, travelling via Bergen.

Recommendation: An itinerary-service of the Deutsche Bahn is available for use HERE.

By bus

You can visit the holiday island of Rügen safe, comfortable and without interruptions by taking the attractive long-distance bus connections.
These are available, for instance, from Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Dresden; change of lines may be required for some connections.

Mobility on the island

Mobility for free with “Bus frei” („bus for free“) in Baabe, Göhren, Sellin, and the communities Gager, Middelhagen and Thiessow. Resort card holders can use the busses of the VVR free of charge within the three Baltic Sea resorts and communities. The local railways in the seaside resorts are free-to-use as well. The transport company’s RADzfatz-busses (RAD translates as „bike“) are available for bike transport in summer.Furthermore, the combi-ticket „Wasser & Dampf“ („Water & Steam“) can be used, to go on a boat tour with the “Sundevit” and on a ride with the “Rasender Roland” (“Racing Roland”), a steam-powered narrow-gauge railway

Tours with the „Rasender Roland“ depart in Göhren, Baabe, Putbus and Lauterbach.
