Whoever wants to be on vacation in nature with the whole family, but at the same time wants to enjoy the sea, may find South-Rügen appealing. The southern part of the Pomeranian Baltic island, with its many possibilities for recreation and activities, is a popular destination for nature lovers, as well as for families planning holidays with kids.
The south of the well-liked vacation island of Rügen is mainly used agriculturally. Therefore, the landscape consists primarily of small villages and fields, forests and lakes. Cyclists are welcome on this island whose inhabitants are anxious to preserve natural conditions and the intact beauties of nature. More than 300 km of cycle paths have been developed and signposted over the past years. Since the island with its chalk cliffs is only moderately hilly, longer bike rides are also possible for less trained cyclists. Some of the cycle paths are also suitable for biking with kids. Idyllic fishing villages, historic seaside resorts and – what can be considered typical for the south of Rügen – natural bathing beaches, hardly known and therefore even quiet in summer, await you along the cycle path. The fantastic surf beaches in the south of the island are considered an insider tip amongst surfers.
Whoever books a holiday apartment in the south of Rügen, can do interesting sightseeing trips all over the island from there, as the island has a lot to offer culturally. Especially the towns Garz and Putbus and their historic old towns are worth a visit. In the latter, it is recommendable to pay a visit to the big Orangery, in which exhibitions, concerts and readings take place throughout the year. Additionally, the German Avenue Route (“Deutsche Alleenstraße”) and the historic Spa Route (“Bäderstraße”), on which already 100 years ago spa visitors promenaded from place to place, in order to take a cure and enjoy summer retreat. A Slavic castle mound allows for an insight into times long past on Rügen: the foundations of a heathen temple, dedicated to the god Svantevit, can be found here.
